Wink, Poppy, Midnight

Updated: Oct 3, 2018

Out of five stars, I gave this book a three. I’m still not sure if three stars justifies my feelings. When I first started reading the book, I found it very fast paced and engaging. Poppy reminded me of Ally from Pretty Little Liars, but maybe not as psychotic. Wink reminded me of Marcus from the Volturi in the Twilight Saga, everything was whimsical and there was no need to have a care in the world. Midnight, however, just reminded me of the typical high school guy that hooks up with the wrong girl and falls in love with the girl he least suspected.

If I was asked what is the book about, I honestly would say a love triangle with a twist at the end. The story felt more like a novella than a novel because of the fact that there’s only two major plot points and without all the repetition of words, the book would be thinner. This book was definitely an experimental piece because the characters talked like they were reading from a poem. It got to the point where the repetitions of words lost its effect.

At first, I connected with Wink, until she became very passive and just accepted it when people physically bullied her. It’s obvious that the author wanted Wink to be this mysterious, psychedelic character without her being cliché. She read a lot of fairytales, so that caused her to see the world as one giant story. Her relationship with Poppy wasn’t really explained in the end besides Poppy having a thing for Wink’s brother. Which makes it all the more confusing because throughout the entire story, she goes on and on about how in love she is with Alabama, Midnight’s brother.

As must as I enjoy complicated story lines, this book was hard to keep up with and make sense of. It did sort of remind me of The Merciless by Danielle Vega with its creepiness and setting. However, The Merciless was easy to follow.

Overall, this was a quick read and probably one I won’t read again. But, the cover is certainly eye catching.
