I’m definitely a newbie when it comes to adult fantasy stories. I did not expect so much lure for attempts at a sex scene. Soulless feels like an adult version of Twilight with a touch of Fifty Shades of Grey. Alexia Tarabotti is a very enticing character because she knows her place in modern society, the 18th century, but she also understands her limits as a woman during that time. She just wants to help those she cares about and protect the supernatural world from evil scientists and exposure.
Alexia’s love interest is Lord Maccon who’s an alpha wolf and head of the B.U.R. agency, some kind of supernatural police. They’re relationship is definitely Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth Bennet on steroids, but it’s fun to read about.
Although this book was only a manga version of the story, I wish we could have seen more of Alexia’s and Maccon’s relationship develop emotionally rather than sexually. Alexia definitely comes across as a tease which drives Maccon mad. His inner mating instincts as a werewolf make him want Alexia as more than just a mistress or wife but a soulmate.
I do appreciate the world and its time setting, but the poking fun at etiquette was no joke back then. Today we can laugh at it all we want, but that’s the way the world worked back then and if you’re going to write about that time era, then you need to respect that.
Overall, I enjoyed this book. The characters were intriguing and well rounded. I’m still not sure what B.U.R. stands for or if the supernatural world is top secret from regular mortal society. Even though this book had a definite finish there’s more to the story in its sequel, so hopefully there will be more cliffhangers or twist endings to urge me to pick up the next book.
