Poor Unfortunate Soul

Updated: Oct 3, 2018

For a book about the sea witch Ursula, there was way more focus on the four witch sisters. Ursula appeared every now and then. She even performed her famous “Poor Unfortunate Souls” song. This was the thinnest book in the series for a good reason. There wasn’t much villain involvement between the four sisters and Ursula. The reason for this was that they knew Ursula was non-trust worthy. She always had another plan that she kept to herself.

I personally wanted more perspective and substance from Ursula. The reason she turned evil was due to the way Triton treated her over the years and banishing her from her own home. There were moments when Triton felt like the villain even though he was supposed to be the neutral party.

The three sisters influenced their magic on Ursula’s death. The youngest sister had no involved, but when she did, she felt betrayed. She specifically instructed her sisters not to get involved with Ursula since she couldn’t be trust, but she didn’t mean to kill her off either.

By the end of the novel, the three sisters needed to get their sister back who fled and untethered her magic from everyone. This led to them needed to get the original witches involved, one being Maleficent which is literally the next novel.

I didn’t love or hate this book. I was more indifferent because these stories are slowly moving away from the Disney tales and towards something completely off story. Hopefully by book 4 the series gets back on track with the Disney villains and possibly heroes having more involvement.
