Before I Fall

Updated: Jul 19, 2020

If you loved the book for everything it stood for, be prepared for major and subtle changes in the film. I won't spoil anything major, but I will say that they completely modernized the story.

The book took place in the 2000's when cell phones were just becoming a big deal, smoking was still cool, and cheating was a major no-no. The film deleted characters such as Sarah Grundel, Alex Liment, Bridget Mcguire, Ms. Winter's, Mr. Tierney, and most of all, Marian Sykes. This was probably done to put more attention on the other major stories. The film was less than 2 hours longs, so at times the emotions and scenes were rushed.

On Day 4, Sam is angry for not surviving past day 3, so her anger is understandable in the book. In the film, they had to make it seem like the story was more than 7 days for Sam's anger to be understandable. I will admit that films have a harder time capturing the true thoughts of the characters without ever saying so blatantly.

If I hadn't read the book, I would have thought that the movie was good. But, the book was better. It was more developed and the characters felt real and relatable. But, everyone has a different opinion, so the only way to judge it is to watch it for your self.
